Hydroxycut Dietary Supplements Recalled, Linked to Liver Failure and Other Injuries

In May 2009, more than a dozen Hydroxycut-brand weight loss and muscle building dietary supplements were recalled after they were associated with liver failure, liver disease, and other potentially fatal injuries. According to the Food and Drug Administration, at least one Hydroxycut user died of liver failure and 23 others reported developing liver damage or other injuries.

Millions of people around the world have used Hydroxycut to lose weight, build muscle, and increase stamina during exercise. The recalled products were eventually allowed back on the United States market after the makers, Iovate Health Sciences of Canada, reformulated the drugs and gained FDA approvals to resume sales.

Lawsuits Filed for Hydroxycut Injuries

At least two class-action lawsuits have been filed by Hydroxycut users who claim they were injured by the products. The suits, filed in Tennessee and Canada, seek financial compensation for medical bills and other damages from the makers of Hydroxycut.

Meanwhile, dozens of federal lawsuits filed against Iovate Health Sciences and other companies that sold or distributed the recalled dietary supplements recently were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation in a Southern California district court.

Other Hydroxycut Injuries and Side Effects

In addition to liver failure and liver disease, Hydroxycut dietary supplements also have been linked to the following types of injuries:

• Cardiovascular disorders

• Seizures

• Rhabdomyolysis, a form of muscle damage which may lead to kidney failure

• Jaundice

• Elevated liver enzymes
