Defective and Dangerous Toys Injure and Kill Many U.S. Children Annually
Every year in the United States, thousands of children are injured or killed by defectively dangerous toys. Toys that contain small pieces pose a risk of choking if the pieces are swallowed by kids. Exposure to paint containing levels of lead which are in excess of federal safety standards can cause devastating and permanent developmental delays and other serious health consequences in young children.
It’s a sad fact of life that many toys adults buy for children thinking they are safe are defective in how they are designed or manufactured. In many cases, toy companies know that their products can be dangerous to children, but fail to take action and remove the toys from the market.
Only after reports of children being injured or killed by the defective toys have been received by the Consumer Product Safety Commission or other product-safety agencies are toy recalls announced. By then, at least for the injured child and their loved ones, it’s too late.
Common Causes of Defective Toy Injuries
Defective toys can injure children in a variety of ways, including:
• Lead paint on surfaces and attached pieces
• Small pieces that detach and pose choking hazards
• Sharp edges
• Pool toys that do not sufficiently inflate to support a child’s weight in water
Injuries Linked to Defective Toys
Children may be injured by defective toys in the following ways:
• Blindness and eye injuries from projectile toys such as guns and darts
• Electrocution, electric shock, or burns from defective electronics and electric toys
• Hearing damage from toys with sounds which exceed safe decibel levels
• Strangulation or entrapment from long strings, ropes, or video game controllers
• Entanglement and strangulation in toys or sporting equipment with nets
• Toxic exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and other chemicals in plastics
• Allergic reactions to fabrics and stuffing in toy animals and blankets
