Daiso Wooden Toys Recalled Due to Choking Hazard
Toy maker Daiso California LLC is recalling about 430 of its wooden children’s toys because the products contain small parts that can break off, posing a choking risk to kids, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
There have been no reports of parts breaking off and there are no known injuries related to the potential defect, the CPSC said in announcing the recall. Still, out of an abundance of caution, the company is recalling the toys to avoid injuries to children who swallow the pieces.
Each year, many children across the United States are injured or killed by defectively dangerous toys. Small parts that can be broken off and swallowed or otherwise ingested can cause choking. Swallowing pieces covered with lead paint or other harmful substances can create a risk of toxic exposure and increased risks of cancer, respiratory problems, and other serious health complications.
Four Wooden Toy Models Recalled
The following models of Daiso-brand wooden toys are included in the recall:
• Penguin Handbell
• Pull Doll
• Alligator Pull Toy
• Rolling Animals
The Penguin Handbell has a small metal bell inside its hollow interior. The Pull Doll’s limbs move up and down when the string is pulled. The Alligator Pull Toy is green and yellow will move in an undulating fashion when pulled. The Rolling Animals are in the forms of a dog, rabbit, cat and mice, and their tails are connected to their bodies by metal springs, the CPSC said.
The brand name “Daiso” is printed on the products’ packaging.
The toys were made in China and sold exclusively at Daiso stores in California from December 2008 through May 2009 for between $1 and $4, the CPSC said.
Consumers should immediately take the recalled toys away from children and contact Daiso for a free replacement toy or a full refund, product safety officials said.
