CPSC: Cambridge Silversmiths Flatware Poses Choking Risk to Kids
About 13,000 units of flatware made by Cambridge Silversmiths Ltd. Inc. contains small pieces of colored plastic on the handles that can come loose and pose a risk of choking to young children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said today.
The company’s Fiesta Masquerade and Home Olympic flatware is being recalled because there have been 28 reports of the plastic inserts on the knives, forks, and other utensils coming loose. One of those incidents resulted in an unspecified injury, according to the CPSC recall notice.
Recalled Flatware Sold at Major Retailers Nationwide
The recall involves the Fiesta Masquerade and the Home Olympic 20-piece flatware sets. The Fiesta Masquerade flatware set is silver-colored and the handles have plastic decorative inserts in red, orange, yellow, green and three different shades of blue. The Home Olympic flatware sets are charcoal and the handles have decorative black inserts, the CPSC said.
The CPSC recall notice has photos of the recalled flatware.
The Fiesta Masquerade flatware was sold exclusively at JC Penny, Federated Department Stores, Bealls, and Homer Laughlin from November 2008 through May 2009 for about $70 per 20-piece set. The Home Olympic style was sold only at Target from August 2008 through August 2009 for about $30 per 20-piece set. All the recalled flatware was manufactured in China.
Defective Products Injure and Kill Thousands of Kids Each Year
Defective products are a leading cause of injury and death to children in the United States. Children can easily choke or ingest small pieces that can come loose from toys or other household products. The recalled flatware is particularly dangerous because children are already putting the items in their mouths to eat, so the small plastic pieces can easily be swallowed or become stuck in a child’s throat, potentially causing fatal choking.
Consumers who have either style of the recalled Cambridge Silversmiths flatware in their possession should stop the sets immediately and contact the company to return the product and obtain a free replacement, the CPSC said.
