Blair Chenille Robe Recall Expanded; 9 Burn-Related Deaths Reported
The ongoing recall of Blair chenille robes keeps growing. The company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced the recall of another 138,000 of the women’s apparel items due to reports of the robes catching fire when they are exposed to open flame while the person is cooking, tending to a stove or a fireplace.
The recall now includes all Blair women’s full-length chenille robes, including all products manufactured by A-One Textile & Towel.
In April, Blair recalled about 162,000 of its chenille robes after receiving reports of the robes catching fire and burning users. After announcement of the recall, the company said it received more reports of people wearing the robes being killed by burns sustained when their chenille robes caught fire.
The CPSC and Blair reissued the first recall in June to remind consumers about the risks of injury or death from flammable chenille robes. The recall is now being expanded to include more robes.
Nine Deaths Linked to Flammable Blair Chenille Robes
A total of nine deaths have been linked to Blair women’s chenille robes that caught fire. Most of the victims were in their 70s or 80s and were either cooking food near an open flame or tending to stoves or fireplaces when their clothing caught fire, officials said.
The following Blair apparel items are recalled:
• Full Length Women’s Chenille Robes
• Women’s Chenille Jacket
• Women’s Chenille Lounge Jacket
• Women’s Chenille Top
The recalled robes were manufactured in Pakistan in April 2009 and may not meet U.S. flammability standards, posing a risk of serious burns to consumers if the garments are exposed to an open flame, the CPSC and Blair said.
