Affy Tapple Caramel Apples Recalled, Undeclared Peanut Allergy Risks Cited
Just in time for Halloween and Fall Festivals across the country, an Illinois company is recalling some of its caramel apples because they may contain peanuts not declared on the packaging, posing a risk of serious allergic reactions in some consumers.
Affy Tapple, LLC, of Niles, Ill. and the Food and Drug Administration announced the voluntary recall of the company’s “Limited Edition – Classic Candy Flavors” two-pack caramel apples. The product’s labeling does not include the allergen statement “manufactured on shared equipment with peanuts and tree nuts.”
The company has not received any reports of allergic reactions or illness in consumers of the caramel apples, but there has been one report of a peanut fragment found on top of one of the coated apples, prompting the recall, officials said. It is suspected peanuts may have contaminated the caramel apples during the manufacturing process.
The recalled caramel apples pose no threat of injury to consumers who are not allergic to peanuts or tree nuts, the FDA said.
Specific UPC Code Recalled
Only the company’s two-pack caramel apple packages bearing a UPC code of 34986-13000 with a “Best By” date on or before 10/15/09 are included in the recall. The apples are contained in a clear plastic package with a dark brown label and were distributed to select stores in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Kentucky, the FDA said.
Consumers who have purchased “Limited Edition – Classic Candy Flavors” two-pack caramel apple with the UPC code of 34986-13000 and a “Best By” date on or before 10/15/09 may return it to the point of purchase for a refund, the FDA said.
