Woman Blames Daughter’s Death on Risperdal Prescription

Use of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal caused an Illinois girl to develop sleep apnea, a condition that was not properly treated by doctors, causing the girl’s death, according to a new lawsuit.

Carrie Krug, whose daughter, Lori, died in May 2002, accuses doctors at Granite City Illinois Hospital Company and Granite City Clinic Corp. of causing the girl’s death. Lori Krug had schizophrenia, a devastating mental disorder that causes people to hear voices and interferes with their ability to think.

Risperdal, known chemically as risperidone, was first approved in 1993 to treat schizophrenia, symptoms of bipolar disorder including manic depression, and symptoms of irritability in autistic children.

Risperdal Caused Sleep Apnea, Suit Contends

In her lawsuit filed on Sept. 25 in Madison County Circuit Court, Carrie Krug claims her daughter was prescribed Risperdal by doctors at the hospital, according to a report in the Madison-St. Clair County Record. The girl was not warned about the risks associated with the drug, which include sleep apnea and significant weight gain.

While taking Risperdal, Lori developed sleep apnea, according to the lawsuit. Lori saw a doctor the day before she died complaining of shortness of breath and coughing, but her sleep apnea was not diagnosed and sleep study was not ordered.

Carrie Krug said it was only in the last two years that she discovered the cause of her daughter’s death was associated with taking Risperdal and the doctors’ failure to properly diagnose the side effects of the drug.

Financial Damages Sought for Death

Lori Krug’s death has caused her family and loved ones to be deprived of her love, companionship, consortium, support and guidance, the suit contends. The family also incurred medical and funeral costs, according to the complaint.

Carrie Krug’s lawsuit included four counts against the hospitals and seeks more than $300,000, plus costs, according to the Record.
