Undeclared Allergens Prompt FDA Recalls of Two Food Products
Great Value Berry Crunch cereal and Crown Cookie snacks are being recalled because the foods contain allergens that are not listed as ingredients and pose a threat of injury or death to consumers with food allergies.
Gilster-Mary Lee Corp. said a single lot of its 21-ounce boxes of Great Value Berry Crunch cereal may contain sliced almonds that are not listed as an ingredient. Only boxes carrying the lot code 07 21 10 N02 are included in the voluntary recall, the Food and Drug Administration said.
Consumers with allergies or sensitivity to almonds and other tree nuts may suffer severe allergic reactions to the cereal, the FDA warned. No illnesses have been reported to date.
Great Value Berry Crunch was sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia solely through Walmart stores.
The almonds were included in the packages of Great Value Berry Crunch cereal due to human error in the company’s production and packaging processes, the FDA said.
Also being recalled today are Crown Cookie (Choco Sanddo) brand snacks made by Y.S.Trading Corp. of Long Island, N.Y. due to the presenced of undeclared milk allergens.
The food maker is recalling its 161 gram waxed cardboard boxes of Crown Cookie because they products may contain undeclared milk allergens, posing a risk of life-threatening allergic reactions to consumers with milk allergies.
The recalled cookies were distributed in New York City and New Jersey retail stores. The product comes in 161 gram waxed cardboard boxes marked with Codes 2008, 12. 01 and 2009, 11.30.
No illnesses or allergic reactions involving this product have been reported to date, the FDA said.
The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by New York State Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of undeclared milk allergens in the boxes of Crown cookie which did not declare a milk ingredient on the label, the FDA said.
