Lead Risk Prompts Recall of Team Work Trading Children’s Animal Masks and Pendants
About 1,400 pieces of jewelry and children’s masks made by Team Work Trading of Los Angeles are being recalled today because the products contain high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested and has been tied to serious health effects in children.
One style of children’s animal mask and four styles of children’s pendants are involved in the recall. The mask resembles the face of a cat and the pendants carry various symbols, including a dog tag with fire symbol (aka Bleach), knife and lion symbol (aka Final Fantasy), Mickey Mouse symbol (aka Kingdom of Hearts), and burning sun symbol (aka Naruto), according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice.
The pendants are silver and hung from silver-colored chains. They were made in China and sold at gift shops and modeling stores nationwide, as well as from the Team Work Trading store, from November 2008 through March 2009 for between $4 and $8, the CPSC said.
There have been no reports of injuries from the toxic items, the CPSC said, but ingesting lead has been linked to reduced brain functioning and other serious, permanent disabilities in children who are exposed to products containing high levels of lead. The CPSC places strict limits on the amount of lead that can be in children’s products in an effort to reduce lead-related injuries in children.
Consumers who have the recalled masks and pendants in their possession should immediately stop using the items and contact Team Work Trading for a refund or exchange, the CPSC said.
