216,000 OfficeMax Chairs Recalled, Falls and Injuries Reported
OfficeMax is recalling about 216,000 Task Chairs because more than a dozen people have reported being hurt when the back or base posts on the chairs broke while they were sitting, causing them to fall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
Naperville, Ill.-based OfficeMax Inc. has received about 35 reports of the chairs breaking, including 15 reports of consumers suffering injuries including lacerations, muscle strains, contusions, and concussions, according to the CPSC recall notice.
OfficeMax Task Chairs with model numbers OM182 and OM96614 are involved in today’s recall. The model number can be found on the bottom of the seat printed on a white UPC label. The chairs were sold in charcoal and dark charcoal colors and have black plastic arms and a rolling base made of plastic and metal, the CPSC said.
The chairs were made in China and sold at OfficeMax stores nationwide, on the company’s website (www.officemax.com), and in OfficeMax catalogs as well as directly to commercial clients from September 2003 to July 2008 for between $40 and $65.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chairs and return them to any OfficeMax store for a full refund or a $55 gift card if the consumer does not have a receipt, the CPSC said.
