STEAM Dietary Supplements Recalled for Undeclared Drug Ingredient
STEAM dietary supplements made by Nutracoastal Trading LLC are being recalled because the products contain a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, making the supplements unapproved and potentially dangerous drugs, the Food and Drug Administration said.
Laboratory analysis of one lot of the supplements detected Tadalafil, the active ingredient in FDA-approved drugs for treatment of erectile dysfunction that is not listed on the supplements’ label. The recalled STEAM-brand products were sold in bottles containing five capsules, from lot number 90260, with an expiration date of “6 11” and a UPC code of 8 52263 30033 1, the FDA said.
The recalled capsules were distributed in white bottles to retail stores nationwide.
Tadalafil, which is found in Cialis and similar erectile dysfunction drugs, may interact with nitrates found in nitroglycerin and other prescription drugs. The interaction may reduce blood pressure to dangerously low levels and also cause side effects including headaches and flushing.
Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease who take nitrates are particularly at risk from complications from Tadalafil.
Consumers who have the recalled STEAM dietary supplements in their possession should stop using the products immediately and contact their physician or other healthcare provider to report adverse effects.
