Salmonella Worries Prompt Recall of Cooking Spices

Spice rubs made by Adams Extract and Spice, LLC. are being recalled today because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella, a common form of bacteria that can produce life-threatening food poisoning in some consumers.

The products contain ground black pepper supplied by another company, Van de Vries Spice Corporation, which has tested positive for salmonella. An initial test of pepper from the same lot had tested negative for the bacteria, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in consumers, particularly young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy people infected with salmonella experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain and recover in a few days without medical treatment.

However, in some rare circumstances, a salmonella infection can reach the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis, according to the FDA.

To date, no reports of illnesses have been reported to the FDA in connection with the recalled spice rub products, officials said.
