Burn Risks Force Recall of Black & Decker Thermal Coffeemakers

About 9,800 Black and Decker thermal coffeemakers distributed by Applica Consumer Products Inc., of Miramar, Fla. are being recalled because the units can overheat and melt, with the potential for causing burns to users.

The company has received one report of a coffeemaker melting, but no reports of injuries, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The recall involves the company’s eight-cup programmable thermal coffeemakers, with the model number TCM1000IKT printed on the rating plate on the bottom of the units.

The potentially dangerous coffeemakers were made in China and sold at retail stores, including Wal-Mart, across the United States from April 2008 through July 2009 for between $50 and $65.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled coffeemakers and contact Applica to receive a free replacement household product.
