220,000 Wii Battery Recharging Stations Recalled Over Burns, Fire Risks
About 220,000 battery recharging stations for the Wii video game system are being recalled because the battery packs may overheat and catch fire, posing a risk of injury to users.
Psyclone Essentials and React Wii™ 4-Dock Battery Recharge Stations, made by Griffin International Cos., Inc., of Minneapolis, Minn., are involved in today’s product recall.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received six reports of the recharging stations overheating, including two incidents in which users suffered minor burns to their hands.
Two Brand Names Recalled
The Wii 4-Dock Recharge Station is used to recharge the handheld controllers used in the popular video games. The unit is white in color and includes four recharging stations and a four rechargeable battery pack, the CPSC said. It was sold under the brand names and model numbers Psyclone (PSE6501) and React (RT530), which can be found on the underside of the unit.
The recharging stations were made in China. The Pysclone Essentials brand was sold at Target at Toys “R” Us locations nationwide and on Amazon.com. The React model was sold at Best Buy stores across the United States. Both units were sold from January 2008 through July 2009 for about $50, the CPSC said.
Users who have the recalled battery recharging stations in their possession should immediately stop using them and contact Griffin International to arrange a return of the product and a free replacement, officials said.
