200,000 Frigidaire and Kenmore Elite Electric Ranges Recalled
About 200,000 Frigidaire and Kenmore Elite brand electric ranges are being recalled after reports of the units malfunctioning and causing burns to users, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
Frigidaire, a division of Electrolux Home Products Inc., of Augusta, Ga., has received 126 reports of incidents in which the electric ranges turned on without being switched on, failed to turn off when switched off, or heated to different temperatures than selected by the user.
In four of the reported incidents, consumers suffered minor burns as a result of the malfunctioning ranges, and in two cases, there was minor property damage caused, the CPSC said.
Selected Models and Serial Numbers Recalled
The recalled appliances are Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional and Kenmore Elite smoothtop electric ranges with rotary knobs and digital displays. Selected model and serial numbers are included in the recall.
For a complete listing of the Frigidaire and Kenmore ranges being recalled, check out the CPSC recall notice here. The model and serial number can be found by opening the range drawer at the base of the unit.
The ranges being recalled were made in the United States and sold at Sears and other national chain and independent retailers nationwide from June 2001 through August 2009 for between $1,000 and $2,500, the CPSC said.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ranges and contact Frigidaire or Sears to schedule a free repair, the CPSC said.
Household Appliances Can Be Dangerous
Defectively dangerous household appliances, such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and ranges, are a leading cause of in-home accidents and are frequently recalled due to problems.
Just this week, Maytag added another 46,000 refrigerators to an earlier recall of about 1.6 million of the appliances due to the products overheating or catching fire.
