Woman Declared Brain Dead After Pedicab Accident
A retired teacher from Illinois who was visiting San Diego for a national education convention has died of a severe head injury after she fell from a pedicab and struck her head on the asphalt.
Sharon Miller, 60, reportedly was riding in the pedicab with another woman on July 4 when the vehicle tipped over while it was being driven through downtown San Diego. Such vehicles are popular modes of transportation among tourists and downtown revelers and can be rented for single rides. Passengers ride in a basket seat attached to the back of a bicycle, which is ridden by a driver.
Pedicabs are commonly seen in many downtown and urban areas across the United States and personal injuries caused by accidents involving the vehicles are not uncommon.
Miller and her unidentified friend reportedly rented the pedicab early Saturday morning and were being driven down First Avenue in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District when the driver of the pedicab began swerving from side to side, causing the vehicle to tip over, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Miller reportedly fell out of the pedicab seat and struck her head on the street. She was transported to a hospital, where she was diagnosed with a severe head injury and placed on life support. She was declared brain dead hours a day later and Miller’s relatives have decided to keep her on life support pending donation of her organs, officials said.
