More Nonfat Dry Milk Products Recalled Due to Salmonella Fears
Sturm Foods Inc. is the latest food company to recall its nonfat dry milk products made with ingredients from Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, which are suspected of being contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
In the past few weeks, one product after another has been ordered recalled because they contain Plainview ingredients. Plainview sold dry milk and other ingredients directly to dozens of food companies, who are now being forced to recall their products because they contain the dry milk products suspected of carrying salmonella.
Salmonella is a form of bacteria that is a leading cause of food poisoning in the United States. It can cause severe, even deadly infections in some people, especially young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that may be bloody.
Sturm, based in Manawa, Wi., is recalling more than a dozen of its dry milk products, sold under numerous brand names and in various sizes. A complete listing of the Sturm products being recalled can be found here. Only the brands and sizes of Sturm products included on the list are involved in today’s recall, the Food and Drug Administration said.
Product Recalls Continue to Mount
Dunkin’ Donuts was the first to temporarily pull the company’s hot chocolate and Dunkaccino beverages on June 30 because they are made with Plainview dry milk products. Since then, on an almost daily basis, other food companies have announced their own product recalls because the items contain Plainview ingredients.
However, no confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning have so far been linked to Plainview products or foods made by other companies using Plainview ingredients, officials said.
