Kroger’s Flavored Popcorn Products Recalled Amid Salmonella Fears
Three brands of Kroger Co. popcorn products are being recalled after it is suspected that at least one ingredient in the foods was contaminated with salmonella bacteria, the Food and Drug Administration said.
Kroger Popcorn Seasoning Movie Theater Butter Flavored, Kroger Popcorn Seasoning White Cheddar Flavored, and Kroger Fat Free Butter Flavored Sprinkles were sold nationwide in the grocery chain’s locations as well as other retail stores the company owns and operates.
A food company that supplies some ingredients for the Kroger’s products said one ingredient may have been tainted with salmonella, a type of food-borne bacteria commonly blamed for causing food poisoning.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and other symptoms. While most people infected with salmonella develop only mild to moderate symptoms and recover within a few days without requiring medical treatment, in some cases, a salmonella infection can reach the blood stream and cause severe, deadly complications. The elderly, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk of developing severe salmonella symptoms.
