In-Wall Electric Timers Recalled Due to Electrical Shock Risk

About 240,000 in-wall electronic timers manufactured by Intermatic Inc. are being recalled because the devices may shock users when they are changing the batteries.

The Intermatic products are lamp and appliance timers that typically take the place of standard wall switches. They come in white, off-white, and almond colors and measure 2 ½ inches high by 1 ¾ inches wide. The following model numbers are included in the recall: ST01, ST01C, ST01AC, ST01AC70, ST01C70, ST01CL, EI600C, EI600LAC, EI600LAC8, EI600WC, and EI600WC8.

The company has received 12 reports of consumers receiving a minor electric shock while changing the timer’s battery, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Only specific units with the brand name “Intermatic” molded on the plastic front cover door, with four keypad buttons, and no three-digit date code (such as “04C”) stamped on the inside of the cover door are included in the recall, company officials said. Other Intermatic timers are not being recalled.

The recalled units were made in Mexico and sold at retailers and electrical distributors nationwide from March 2007 through June 2009 for between $25 and $45, the CPSC said.

Consumers who have the recalled Intermatic in-wall timers are advised to stop using the items immediately. Users should not attempt to replace the timer’s battery until they receive a free repair kit with installation instructions from the manufacturer.
