Country Creations Recalls Frosting Packets; Salmonella Contamination Suspected
Frosting packets included in Country Creations Braided Bread and cinnamon rolls products are being recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella, the bacteria blamed for causing food poisoning.
The packets of frosting included with frozen bread products were produced and distributed nationwide between September 1, 2008 and June 12, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration said. The packets come in small, clear and unmarked plastic pouches that contain two to three ounces of frosting.
The frosting was made using non-fat dried milk provided by Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, which has announced a recall of many of its food products due to suspected salmonella contamination. Many food makers have been forced to recall their own products made with ingredients provided by Plainview.
There have been no reports of illness from consumers who eat the frosting, but the FDA is warning consumers not to eat Country Creations frosting to avoid contracting food poisoning.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause severe, even fatal infections. Most healthy people infected with salmonella experience symptoms including fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and recover in a few days without need for medical care. However, the frail and elderly, young children, and people with weakened immune systems who are exposed to salmonella are at increased risk of developing serious arterial infections, arthritis, and endocarditis.
