16,000 Packets of LA Weight Loss Café Au Lait Drinks Recalled Amid Salmonella Concerns

About 16,120 Café Au Lait powdered beverages sold through LA Weight Loss centers in Georgia, Illinois, and Washington are being recalled because they may carry salmonella bacteria.

The 4.07-ounce packets were made using instant non-fat dry milk products from Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, which has recalled some of its products due to suspected salmonella contamination. Weight Loss Services, LP, the Pennsylvania-based owner of the LA Weight Loss chain, is the latest company to announce a recall due to suspect Plainview ingredients.

The recalled drink packets came in retail boxes containing seven envelopes and carried the UPC code of 55958-00365 printed on the back panel of the box. Only 403 cases containing boxes with the following “Best By” dates printed on the tops of the boxes are involved in today’s recall:

• BEST BY 08/13/29

• BEST BY 08/14/09

• BEST BY 11/28/09

• BEST BY 01/30/10

• BEST BT 01/31/10

There have been no reports of consumer illness associated with the Café Au Lait drink packets, the Food and Drug Administration said.

People who eat food or drink beverages containing salmonella can develop serious and sometimes fatal infections. The symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea which may be bloody. Young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems are most at risk of developing severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
