Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough Recalled, Illnesses Reported
Nestle USA has recalled its Toll House brand of refrigerated cookie dough products after some consumers became ill after eating the raw dough.
Toll House dough that comes in bars, tubs, and tubes as well as seasonal and limited edition cookie dough products and dough sold under the name Ultimates are included in the recall. Other Toll House products, including the company’s chocolate chips, are not included.
The Food and Drug Administration said there have been 66 reports since March 2009 of consumers becoming sick after eating uncooked Toll House dough. The reports have come from 28 states and approximately 25 of those sickened have had to be hospitalized. There have been no deaths associated with tainted Toll House cookie dough, the FDA said.
Consumers are being advised to avoid eating raw Toll House cookie dough and throw away any of the company’s prepackaged, refrigerated cookie dough products in their homes. Restaurants and retail outlets also are advised to stop selling cookies made from the dough products.
Nestle and food-safety authorities also are reminding consumers that the packaging of refrigerated Toll House cookie dough products carries warnings about the risks of eating uncooked dough.
The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are continuing to investigate the reports to determine whether the bacteria E. coli, a common source of food poisoning, is responsible.
Nestle reportedly is fully cooperating with the recall and assisting the FDA and CDC in the investigation.
E. coli is a life-threatening bacterium that can result in food poisoning and symptoms including painful stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in some cases kidney failure. Recently, E. coli has been blamed for outbreaks involving tainted beef and water wells in Oklahoma.
