At Least Two Killed, Dozens Possibly Injured in D.C.-Area Subway Wreck

A collision today between two Metro subway trains near Washington, D.C. has left at least two people dead and many more injured, according to breaking news reports.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. (E.S.T.) on June 22, 2009 between stations on the above-ground public transit line. The trains reportedly crashed head-on while traveling on the system’s Red Line near Takoma Park, Maryland.

Such accidents involving buses, trains, trolleys, and trams can cause death and severe injuries which require hospitalization and ongoing medical treatment and physical therapy that can cost millions of dollars over the course of the victim’s lifetime.

Officials at the scene have said there are at least two fatalities and nine injuries, although media reports indicate many more people have been seen limping away from the crumbled train cars, indicating more injuries may soon be reported.

Also, a brief statement just issued via email by the public transit authority gave a glimpse into the devastation.

“Metro reports that two trains collided and one train is on top of the other train. Metro reports massive injuries at this time,” the Washington, D.C., emergency alert system said.
