Hydroxycut Dietary Supplements Recalled Due to Deadly Liver Damage

More than a dozen Hydroxycut dietary supplements are being recalled because they have been linked to severe, and in at least one case fatal, liver injury in users, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The products, made by Iovate Health Sciences Inc. of Canada, have been associated with 23 reports of serious health problems, including jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, which can be an indication of liver injury, the FDA said. One Hydroxycut user died as a result of severe liver damage and another suffered liver damage serious enough to require a liver transplant, officials said.

Other consumers have reported suffering seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and a type of muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis, which may cause kidney failure. People using Hydroxycut have suffered injuries after taking the supplements at the doses recommended on the product’s bottle, the FDA said.

“The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products,” said Linda Katz, M.D., interim chief medical officer of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements sold for weight-loss, fat burning, energy enhancement, low carbohydrate diet aids, and water loss under both the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names.

The following Hydroxycut products are involved in the FDA recall announced today:

• Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets

• Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets

• Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets

• Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets

• Hydroxycut Liquid Shots

• Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)

• Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
