Face Paints Recalled After Skin Injuries to Children

The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to use certain water-based face paints made by Oriental Trading Co. which have been linked to severe adverse skin reactions in children.

The products, made in China and distributed across the United States, have been blamed for causing rashes, itchiness, burning sensation, and swelling on the skin of the face. Recently, an undisclosed number of children who had their faces painted at an organized event suffered negative reactions to the face paints, the FDA said. No further details about the number of children affected or the location or date of the organized event were released by the FDA.

FDA laboratory testing detected “significant microbial contamination” in the face paints, officials said. The products are now the subject of a voluntary FDA recall.
