Thousands More Jardine Cribs Recalled Over Strangulation, Entrapment Risks

Another 96,000 cribs made by Jardine Enterprises are being recalled because the wooden slats on the infant beds can break and create a gap that poses a risk of entrapment and strangulation in children.

The recall is the latest involving Jardine cribs. About 320,000 of the company’s cribs were recalled in June 2008 and another 56,000 were ordered taken off the market in January 2009, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

So far, product safety officials have received 31 reports of slats on the sides of the cribs breaking, including two reports of children becoming trapped in the gap created by the broken slat. In 10 of those reported incidents, parents reported that their children had broken the slat while in the crib and in one case, a child suffered minor bumps and abrasions after becoming trapped, the CPSC said.

The Jardine cribs being recalled were made in China and Vietnam and sold at KidsWorld, Geoffrey Stores, Toys “R” Us, and Babies “R” Us stores nationwide and online at babiesrus.com, from September 2005 through April 2009 for between $220 and $330, according to the CPSC.
