Victims of 2007 Minnesota Bridge Collapse Offered $36.4 Million
People who were injured and relatives of victims killed in the 2007 collapse of a bridge in Minneapolis have been offered a total of $36.4 million in compensation, state officials said.
The amount, to be divided up between 179 victims of the tragedy, was offered by the state’s victim compensation fund on Feb. 27, 2009. Individual victims of the collapse have until April 16, 2009 to either accept or reject the compensation, officials said.
An attorney for the panel that determined the settlement amount said she expects most victims to accept the offers. The money is intended to compensate people who lost a loved one in the tragedy for their loss and help survivors bear the costs of medical treatment, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages caused by the accident.
The Interstate 35 bridge collapsed on Aug. 1, 2007, killing 13 and injuring 145.
