FDA Warns About Dangers of “Natural” Weight Loss Pills
People looking to slim down after the holiday season should avoid dozens of weight-loss products that contain potentially dangerous ingredients not listed on the product label, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.
The agency has named nearly 30 weight-loss products that are billed as “natural” fat busters and have exotic brand names that suggest they are innovative “herbal” remedies from Asia. To the contrary, the FDA warns consumers that the drugs contain powerful appetite-suppressing drugs and at least one suspected cancer-causing carcinogen that could result in severe injuries.
The FDA found that many weight-loss pills on the market contain sibutramine, a powerful appetite suppressant that is related to amphetamines. The drug can cause heart attacks, strokes, heart palpitations and other problems.
Other diet drugs contain phenolphthalein, a chemical long used as a laxative that is being withdrawn from the market because of cancer risks.
The FDA said none of the products containing the dangerous ingredients had them listed on their labeling, so consumers would have no way of knowing what they are consuming. The agency is considering filing criminal charges against the makers of the dangerous weight-loss pills for endangering consumers.
The drugs named by the FDA as being potentially dangerous include the following brand names: Fatloss Slimming; 2 Day Diet; 3x Slimming Power; 5x Imelda Perfect Slimming; 3 Day Diet Japan Lingzhi; 24 Hours Diet; 7 Diet Day/Night Formula; 7 Day Herbal Slim; 8 Factor Diet; 999 Fitness Essence; Extrim Plus and GMP; Imelda Perfect Slim; Lida DaiDaihua; Miaozi Slim Capsules; Perfect Slim; Perfect Slim 5x; Phyto Shape; ProSlim Plus; Royal Slimming Formula; Slim 3 in 1; Slim Express 360; Slimtech; Somotrin; Superslim; TripleSlim; Zhen de Shou; and Venom Hyperdrive 3.0.
