Medical Journal: Can’t Rule Out Link Between Vytorin and Cancer

The jury is still out on whether the cholesterol-lowering drug Vytorin is linked to an increased risk of cancer, the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine have concluded.

The editors, citing the differing results of three recent studies of Vytorin, said there is not enough evidence on either side to either prove or rule out a link between the drug and a cancer risk. Vytorin, which is co-marketed by Merck & Co. and Schering-Plough Corp., racked up $5 billion in worldwide sales in 2007, officials said.

Studies have been done to investigate a possible link between Vytorin and an increased risk of cancer, but the medical journal editors said the results leave users and physicians unsure about the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
