GM Recalls Nearly 1 Million Vehicles Due To Fire Hazard

Automaker General Motors is recalling 944,000 cars, trucks, and SUVs because the heated windshield washer system in the vehicles may start a fire. At least three fires have been caused by the defect, but no injuries have been reported, GM says.

The fluid-heating system is installed in many of GM’s larger vehicles and is used in cold weather climates to prevent ice and frost from building up on the windshield.  A circuit board in the vehicle which controls the warming feature can overheat, causing fire.

The recall, announced August 29, 2008, involves the following GM models and vehicles:

• Model year 2006-08 Buick Lucerne sedans and model year 2008 Buick Enclave SUVs

• Model year 2006-08 Cadillac DTS sedans and model year 2007-08 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT SUVs

• Model year 2007-08 Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado trucks and Suburban and Tahoe SUVs

• Model year 2007-08 GMC Acadia, Yukon, and Yukon XL SUVs and Sierra trucks

• 2008 Saturn Outlook SUVs

Of the 944,000 vehicles involved in the recall, an estimated 850, 000 are in the United States, officials said.
