600,000 Simplicity Cribs Recalled Over Strangulation Risk
More than a half-million Simplicity Drop Side Cribs sold at major retailers nationwide have been ordered recalled due to a threat of infant entrapment, strangulation, and suffocation, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The massive recall comes less than a month after 900,000 Simplicity-brand convertible bassinets were ordered off store shelves following reports of two infants dying after becoming trapped by a metal bar on the infant beds.
The Simplicity Drop Side Cribs contain improper hardware that can allow the drop-down side of the crib to come off its tracks, creating an opening that can entrap and strangle infants, officials said. Product safety officials have received nine reports of the crib side coming off the tracks; however, no injuries associated with the defect have been reported.
The recalled crib model numbers include: 8620, 8745, 8748, 8755, 8756, 8778, 8810, and 8994. The recalled drop side cribs have a date code, which can be found on a label on the headboard under the mattress support, which ends in 05DH, 05GB, 06DH, 06GB, 07DH or 07GB (examples: 1806 DH or 0507 GB). The recalled model names include: Aspen and Crib N Changer Combo, Gabrielle, Camille, Providence and Shenandoah. Only the brand name “Simplicity” can be seen on the label on the headboard.
The recalled cribs were sold across the United States from January 2005 to August 2008 at AAFES, of Dallas, Texas; Babies “R” Us, of Wayne, N.J.; Burlington Coat Factory/Baby Depot, of Burlington, N.J.; K’s Merchandise (out of business); Meijer Distribution Inc., of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Nebraska Furniture Mart, of Omaha, Neb.; ShopKo, of Green Bay, Wis.; Target, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., of Bentonville, Ark.
People who own the recalled Simplicity Drop Side crib should stop using the item immediately and return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund or store credit.
