Hot Pockets Recalled: May Contain Plastic Pieces

Swiss food giant Nestle has recalled about 215,000 pounds of its Hot Pocket pepperoni pizza sandwiches after customer complaints of finding pieces of plastic in the food, officials said.

The voluntary recall, announced August 21, 2008, involves the 54-ounce, 12-pack Hot Pocket items that were produced on June 5, 2008 and sold at retail stores nationwide. The recalled items carry a UPC code of #436950751. Also, the side of the recalled cartons read: “8157544614D,” “EST 7721A,” and “BEST BEFORE JAN2010.”

There have been no reported injuries as a result of the contaminated Hot Pockets, but the recall was prompted by at least four customer complaints of finding hard, red plastic in the food, according to Nestle officials.

In July 2008, Nestle recalled nearly 200,000 pounds of Lean Pockets spinach artichoke chicken sandwiches after consumers complained of finding plastic in those items.
