Bush Signs Bill Banning Lead from Children’s Toys

President Bush has signed into law consumer-safety legislation that bans lead from children’s toys, taking a tough stand against contaminated products and imposing the toughest standard in the world.

The new law prohibits all but minute levels of lead in products designed for children 12 and younger. An estimated 28,000 American deaths each year are liked to unsafe products, including toys, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The bill signed into law by Bush on August 14, 2008 also bans a chemical additive called phthalates and doubles the budget of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is charged with ensuring that products are safe.
