Zimmer Knee Surgery Instrument Recalled

Zimmer Holdings, Inc., a maker of instruments used in minimally invasive knee replacement surgeries, has recalled one of its products due to problems with the tool breaking during procedures.

The tool, the NexGen tibial broach impactor, is used to prepare the bone for the implant, officials said. There have been six reports of the tool breaking during surgery, leaving tiny metal shards inside patients, officials said.

Over time, these metal shards could cause pain to knee-replacement patients, officials said.

At the time of the recall, there reportedly were 1,491 of the affected instruments in use.
