E. Coli Outbreak Tied to Tainted Beef Spreads to More States
An outbreak of the deadly food-borne bacteria E. coli in the nation’s heartland has grown, with new cases being reported in neighboring states, health officials said.
Cases of E. coli infection had first been reported in Michigan and Ohio, but confirmed cases have now been found in Kentucky, Indiana and New York. An estimated 41 people have been sickened or hospitalized with E. coli symptoms since the outbreak began in May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The E. coli outbreak is tied to beef from Nebraska Beef Ltd. sold in Kroger stores throughout Michigan and Ohio. More than 5.3 million pounds of ground beef have now been recalled.
